Based on a unique data set from a large representative survey across several countries in Eastern Europe, we study awareness and support for domestic violence legislation, as well as knowledge about three recent reforms. We find important heterogeneity in several dimensions, in particular that men, younger cohorts, married and less educated people are less well-informed, as well as minority language speakers. Studies of legislation awareness are important to motivate and target information campaigns, and of high policy relevance, as for legislation to induce a reduction in crime, information and awareness among the population are in many cases necessary.
